Phenomena reported prior to investigation: Knocking and bangs sounds in the hallway, doors slamming shut unexplainably on the first floor. The sounds of a woman screaming or moaning in pain, chatter in an empty hallway. A woman dressed in white was seen upstairs, from the outside by a pedestrian when the building was empty.

The Wausau Paranormal Research Society investigated The Old Hospital in Gillett, WI, which is now used as office rentals for different local businesses. During the investigation, the lower level was undergoing some final renovations. The second floor was left intact; the surgical room, waiting room, nurses’ station and patient rooms were located on the second level.

Upon arriving, the team received a complete tour of the full building. The first floor had a reception area in the front, followed by a hallway with small offices on each side. The stairs followed towards the left of the hallway, leading to the second floor. At the end of the stairs, the surgical room was located immediately to the right side; 2-3 steps to the left and a sharp left of the stairs leads to a small hallway. At the end of the small hallway and to the right, was the big hallway with the old patient rooms on each side of it. At the end of the long hallway, you found the old waiting room. The nurses’ station was located on the opposite side of the waiting room, across the hallway.

During the tour of the building, within the first 10 minutes, tapping sounds were heard by 2 investigators, this occurred 2 times throughout the night, the second time it was heard by 3 of the team members. The investigation started with taking base temperature and electromagnetic readings of the entire building. Cameras were set up on both levels, digital, full spectrum and cell phone pictures were taken as well, but no evidence was captured on any still pictures taken that night.

Most of the evidence was captured on digital recordings and some personal experiences. The most active room was the surgical room; here, members of the team experienced sudden temperature drops, uneasy feeling, and high spikes in the electromagnetic field. When performing the base readings, the electromagnetic field would suddenly spike up to 20mg, the spikes continued during the first portion of the night and suddenly stopped during the second half of the investigation. The team further investigated possible causes for the high spikes, and it was determined that the power lines located outside, on the east side could not have been the cause of the spikes in the electromagnetic field. The power lines were ruled out as the spike stopped later in the night. There is nothing the team could find to be the cause of the spike in the electromagnetic field. Readings were taken at different times and different ways. The lights being on or off didn’t affect the electrical levels. Due to the unusually high spikes, a Rem Pod was placed in the surgical room.

The Rem Pod was observed going off and sounding the alarm when anyone entered the room at the start of the investigation. Two of the team members asked questions and the Rem Pod would go off as if it was answering the questions. It also went off later in the night when the room was vacant of people, once a team member got to the room to investigate further, the Rem Pod alarms stopped. Before the night was over the battery was drained from power after being fully charged. The life of the battery is typically much longer and can last days, dying so quickly in less than one full day is very unusual.

A series of EVP sessions were conducted throughout the night in the surgical room. A few disembodied voices were captured during some of the sessions. Questions were asked, then a few seconds of quiet time after each question to allow a response to be captured. There were two different voices heard in the surgical room. The first one was of a male voice; we asked, “Is there anything you want to say?”, and the reply was, “hey”; this was captured on 2 different devices. During another session a team member asked, “Can you please talk to us?”, and a female voice was heard saying, “Yes”.

Another EVP session was conducted in the old waiting room. This session was a quiet session, meaning the people in this room sat quiet to listen as the group in the surgical room did their EVP session there. Here the sound of a child was caught but unable to make out what it was saying. A voice of a female was heard saying “Hi” multiple times.

During one part of the night the Rem Pod went off aggressively. Three of the team members went to the second level to check if anything was making it go off. Upon entering the room there was an eerie feeling felt by 2 of the members. Cold air suddenly appeared in 2 areas of the room. The Rem Pod kept going off for about 5 minutes straight until it suddenly stopped. This occurrence is what drained the battery and caused the Rem Pod to die about 1.5 hrs. later.

The last EVP session was done at the end of the night in the long upstairs hallway. Here we asked questions as one of the group members listened to the ghost box with headphones (Estes Method). If she heard any voices come through, she would say it aloud during the session. Here there were whispers captured coming through while we waited for answers in between questions. At some point, a team member said “thank you” at the end of the session; there was a reply from a female saying “you’re welcome” from a distance.

Most of the evidence captured the night of the investigation was captured on audio recorders. The Rem Pod went off a few times, there were high EMF spikes in the surgical room that suddenly died, there were cold spots and uneasy feelings felt by some of the members. Given the findings, we can safely say paranormal activity is present in the building.
